Patreon! (EDIT - more stuff added!)
Thought I might as well re-post this, so no-one misses out on the new info (or the old) :3 I thought
staggard made some good suggestions about using Patreon, and after snooping around a bit on other artists' pages - and spending some time just wrapping my brain around how it all works, haha - I added a $10 option too. Check out my page for more info (and again, feedback is welcomed!)
And thanks so much
warlegalomon,
seadog_driftwood and
Cekuba!! I truly feel loved, you guys warm my heart ^.^
Original post with all the info:
I was thinking to myself how much I would love to take this and make a full digital painting out of it - or possibly this one; and then there's the background for this, which I have permission to re-work and re-use in a project of my own. Alas, I thought, if only I could justify spending all that time on unpaid art when I have paying customers patiently waiting for their commissions, not to mention bills to pay and food to buy! And then I saw this awesome piece by
Hanmonster, and read the description, and lo! The internet provides XD
I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Patreon by now, but if you haven't, here's a quick overview. As a patron, you sign up (it's free), and agree to pledge a certain amount of money ($2, $5, $10, whatever) to a creator. This isn't a monthly donation, oh no; they receive that money from you only if and when they come up with new content (in my case, that'll be a completed piece of artwork, "complete" in this case meaning about silver standard or higher on my commission chart although my techniques won't be constrained to those specific types). You pay them that amount for each piece of new content they submit, although you can set a cap on how much that can add up to. There's also little bonuses - I'll share WIPs with patrons, have discussions about ideas, and if you pledge $5 or more you'll receive a full-quality, 8.5x11" .PNG file of each completed piece (please note you do NOT have permission to re-distribute those in any way).
A few points to note:
- I can't post porn on there, although I am allowed nudity. So nude pin-up style pictures are probably ok, but I'm afraid there won't be any hardcore smut ;P
- Of course commissioned artwork won't be going on there. This is to encourage me to exercise my creative juices more outside of commissions :3
- I may sometimes do fanart like
Hanmonster did, but other than that the only characters I'll draw are my own.
- I look forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions on my work, but this isn't going to be like a cheap request list, lol. You're welcome to make suggestions, but I may still just do my own thing ;P
- In the past few years, I've done at most three or four original, self-inspired pieces per year. Most of those have been acrylic paintings, because I can at least hope to sell the originals that way; I would like to do some digital paintings too, so I expect my Patreon creations will be a mixture. Just don't expect new artwork coming from me every week, or even every month :P I do still need to put my commissions first, and I certainly don't expect this endeavor to pay the bills or even to pay for all the hours I'll put into a new piece - I'm quite happy to put in most of those hours out of my spare time. But every little bit helps :3
Find out more HERE! :3
I have no idea if this will prove fruitful at all, but it really doesn't cost anything to me or to potential patrons to give it a try, so why not eh? I'll give it a whirl ^.-
PS. Commissions will be opening up again pretty soon, probably not next week but the week after that - I'll give you another official one-week warning, but this is just an extra-early heads-up since I'm here writing a journal anyway :P

And thanks so much

I have to admit that when I started browsing around Patreon I was bouncing off the walls with delight - I remember exclaiming to my husband, "what a wonderful age we live in! Never has it been so easy for a consumer to find entertainment - and so cheaply! - and never has it been so easy for a creative individual to get paid doing something they love." I personally cannot afford to commission any of my favorite artists - and many of them don't take commissions anyway, they've managed to make it all the way to the top (look at Rukis!) - but I'm happy to contribute a buck or two to support the wonderful work they do. I know that my commission prices aren't affordable for everyone; and I also know that some of my fans aren't super keen on all the commissioned work I do, and would be happy to see more of my own work getting posted. I think Patreon is perfect for those people :3
Again, just because I think of Patreon a certain way doesn't mean what you're doing is the wrong way to use it! If there are people who will fund you doing personal art, that is great, and more power to you!
I have been paying mamabliss 9 bucks a month for north of 6 years just to keep her drawing weird TF porn comics, though some times she'll spend half a year drawing big titted vore and scat which makes me question my patronage @..@
I imagine patreon would have the same problem when it comes to 'what ever I feel like drawing' kind of things.
I would love to write and draw my own porn comics some day (yes, they would involve TF ;P). It's such a huge investment of time though, and there would be a big risk that I would be super gung-ho for the first few months but then totally run out of steam and lose interest/ motivation. We weasels aren't known for our long attention spans ^^' I guess that's why it would be good to do it with someone else, ideally a friend who you can get together with and have fun planning, writing and creating the comic together. Who knows what the future will bring? :3
